Streaming a town hall or all-hands to staff

Internal broadcasts are judged against consumer television by an audience who did not choose to watch. That is a difficult standard, and it is why so many all-hands streams get switched off in the first five minutes.

The three failures

  • Unclear audio. Someone in a boardroom on a laptop microphone, twelve feet from the person talking. Staff will not strain to listen to a message they did not ask for.
  • A single static wide. One angle for forty minutes with no cutting. Attention is gone well before the important part.
  • No visual support. Numbers being described verbally rather than shown. If there are figures in the message, they belong on screen.

Fixing those three costs less than most people assume, and it is the difference between a message landing and a message being ignored.

What internal broadcasts need that external ones do not

  • A route for questions that people will actually use. Anonymous submission gets far more engagement than making someone put their name and face to a question in front of the whole company. Moderated, read out, answered on the record.
  • Speed of availability afterwards. People in other time zones and on shift need the recording quickly, not next week.
  • Certainty about who can see it. Internal means internal. That is a platform and access question and it should be settled before anything is announced, particularly for anything commercially sensitive.
  • Captions. Not just accessibility. A large proportion of staff will watch the recording with the sound off at a desk, and captions are what makes that possible.

A note on cadence

Organisations that stream monthly get much better at it than organisations that stream once a year. The room learns, the presenters learn, and the format tightens.

If it is going to be regular, it is worth setting up properly once rather than reinventing it each time.
