Introduction

The LiveU Solo HDMI is a key piece of kit we use on live streaming work across the North East of England. It allows us to bond networks together, meaning we can create a stronger connection for streaming as well as add redundancy in case a connection drops out. Within this post, we will go over how the system works and how we use it.

How it works

LiveU Solo uses the same bonding technology deployed by global broadcasters – LiveU Reliable Transport (LRT™). This allows you to combine multiple IP connections (cellular, WiFi and Ethernet), ensuring bandwidth consistency across the most challenging cellular networks. LiveU's patented technology is optimized for video performance, enabling you to deliver rock-solid video streams from anywhere.

What are our use cases?

We use the LiveU system for many different projects, two notable mentions are funeral streaming and event streaming. Let's first explain how we use it for funerals across Northumberland.

We provide a range of services, however over the pandemic, we started to offer funeral streaming to those who couldn't be there for the services. Within Northumberland, there are a lot of remote churches and whilst most of the crematoriums had facilities to stream a number of churches still don't.

This system allows us to arrive at basically any church in Northumberland and stream instantly, the LiveU does rely on mobile data however if there is a minimal signal we can then add Starlink as another connection. We have currently completed 10+ services with LiveU and only had to use Starlink once so far.

What is Starlink? This is a portable dish that connects to Space X's satellites orbiting earth allowing us to get an internet connection anywhere in the UK with enough coverage of the open sky.

The second use case is event live streaming. Luckily a lot of the events we stream from have a good internet connection, however, outdoor events mean we have to build our own infrastructure on-site. This can come with challenges, especially if relying on just a mobile data connection.

With LiveU we can bond three mobile connections together, along with the connection from our Starlink dish. This means that a total of four connections are bonding together to give a stable and reliable connection for streaming. So why can't we rely on one connection? Well, congestion mainly. Everyone at a festival is using their phones to upload content or is using data in other ways, this can cause some issues and may give a reduced service.

Using four connections bonded together really helps reduce the risk of the stream going off. So there we go, how we use our LiveU Solo to broadcast events across the North East of England.
